Setting up a custom connector sounds more technical than it is. For Phrasly on Claude, the whole process is a short sequence of clicks, one pasted address, and a single sign-in.
This walkthrough covers what you need beforehand, the exact steps, and what to expect on the approval screen, so the first connection takes a minute rather than an afternoon.
What You Need Before Starting
You need a Phrasly account, which can be free or paid, and a Claude plan that supports custom connectors. Custom connectors are available on Claude Pro and Max. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector once for the organization, and each member then connects with their own Phrasly account.
Claude Code, the command-line tool, can connect on any Claude plan that includes it, using a different method described in a separate walkthrough.
The Steps
- Open Settings in Claude, then choose Connectors.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Paste the server address, https://phrasly.ai/api/mcp.
- Click Connect, then approve access with your Phrasly account.
What the Approval Screen Shows
After clicking Connect, you are taken to Phrasly to sign in and approve. The screen lists the permissions Claude is requesting. Phrasly acts only on the account you sign in with and only for the permissions shown. It is worth reading before agreeing, as with any authorization.
Testing the Connection
Once connected, start a new conversation and ask something simple, such as how many words you have left this month. Claude will call the account status tool and report back. If that works, the connection is live.
Then try a short draft. Ask Claude to check it for AI-sounding patterns, or to rewrite it in a more natural voice. The results come back into the same conversation.
What the Tools Do
The MCP server exposes a small set of tools. One rewrites a draft so it reads more naturally using the same engine as the website. One scores text with the Phrasly AI detector and reports the verdict, the AI percentage, and how many sentences were flagged. One reports account status.
Apps that support MCP prompts also get three ready-made commands, covering rewriting, rewriting with a before-and-after check, and a straightforward check for AI patterns.
Checking works the same way. The AI detector is free on the website and runs the same scan, so a first test can happen in a browser tab before any connection is made.
Troubleshooting Common Hiccups
- If the Add custom connector option is missing, check that your plan supports it.
- On Team or Enterprise, confirm that an owner has added the connector.
- If sign-in fails, make sure you are logged in to the right Phrasly account in the same browser.
- If Phrasly asks you to confirm you are human, complete the short check and return to the chat.
How Usage Is Counted
Requests made through Claude draw on the same word balance as the website, at the same rates. Unlimited plans stay unlimited, and free accounts use their free balance. Everything rewritten in Claude also appears in your Phrasly document history, where you can reopen it in the editor.
Disconnecting
You can remove the connector from Claude’s settings at any time, and you can disconnect from within your Phrasly settings as well. Doing either ends access immediately.
For Teams and Organizations
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector once, and members then connect with their own Phrasly accounts. That arrangement keeps administration light and keeps each person’s usage tied to their own account and limits.
- Owners decide whether the connector is available to the organization.
- Members approve access individually with their own Phrasly sign-in.
- Usage draws on each member’s own word balance.
A Two-Minute Verification
After setup, ask for account status, run a short check on a sample paragraph, and try one rewrite. If all three work, the connection is healthy. If any step fails, repeat the approval from the connector settings, which fixes most problems.
It is also worth saving the server address somewhere handy, since you will need it again when you add the connector on another computer or after reinstalling an app.
Choosing a Good First Test
A good first test uses text you wrote yourself and care about, such as a paragraph from a recent email. That gives a realistic sense of how the check scores your own writing and how the rewriting tool changes it. Starting with a made-up sample teaches less, because there is nothing to compare against.
Read the rewritten version slowly. Note what changed, what improved, and what you would reverse. That quick exercise calibrates your expectations for later use.
Keeping Sensitive Material in Mind
As with any tool, think before sending sensitive text. Confidential client material, personal data, and unreleased financial information may be covered by your organization’s policies. If in doubt, ask. Phrasly saves rewritten text to your document history, as it does on the website, which is worth knowing before you decide what to send.
- Check your employer’s policy on external tools.
- Avoid sending personal data that is not needed.
- Review your Phrasly document history periodically.
- Disconnect the connector if you no longer need it.
Using the Same Connection on Several Devices
Custom connectors in the Claude app are tied to your account, so once added they are generally available wherever you sign in. If you use Claude Code on a separate machine, that connection is added separately with the command-line method. Keeping both lets you work wherever you happen to be.
Questions That Come Up After Setup
- Does the connector work in every conversation? It is available once enabled, though you may need to mention the task so the assistant selects the right tool.
- Can I use it on mobile? Availability depends on the app and your plan, so check the connector settings on each device.
- What if I run out of words? Requests draw on your Phrasly balance, so you will be told when the limit is reached.
- Can colleagues share my connection? No. Each person connects with their own Phrasly account.
These answers cover most of what people ask in the first week. For anything beyond them, the setup guide on the Phrasly site walks through the steps in more detail.
A Quick Reference for Setup Day
- Have your Phrasly login ready before you begin.
- Confirm your Claude plan supports custom connectors.
- Keep the server address handy so you can paste it exactly.
- Expect one approval screen and read it before agreeing.
- Test with an account status question before using real text.
With those five items in order, setup usually takes well under five minutes. The most common delay is simply not having the right account open in the browser, which is easy to avoid by signing in first.
Once everything works, it is worth bookmarking the Phrasly setup guide in case you need to add the connector on another computer later or share the steps with a colleague who is just getting started.
If anything in the process feels unclear, the full setup guide on the Phrasly site covers each step with screenshots, and it is worth keeping open in a second tab during the first connection so you can compare what you see with what the guide describes.
Connecting Phrasly to Claude takes a handful of clicks and one approval. After that, checking and refining a draft is a message away, with every result landing in the conversation and in your document history.
